Eyelet Placemat

Pattern Information

Knitting Loom: Small gauge double sided knitting board with at least 41 pegs. The 18 inch Authentic Knitting Board set at standard setting was used in sample.

Yarn: 335 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn (for one placemat). Peaches & Crème was used in the sample.

Notions: Tapestry Needle, Knitting tool, Crochet hook

Placemats are a great way to dress up your table. Make them for everyday, or different ones for each of the holidays. Either way, this is a fun, simple pattern suitable for all skill levels.

Pattern Notes:

The placemat in the picture follows the pattern but there are two variations to the eyelet row on each end. The second variation given is lacier.

Variation # 1: For the end eyelet rows (step 3) make the eyelets (empty pegs) on pegs 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, and 39. This will make the ends lacier.

Variation # 2: This will make the end as lacy as the sides. It is the same as variation # 1 only the eyelets are on pegs 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, and 39.

Eyelets (3 row pattern)

1. Move the loops from the eyelet peg to the peg on the right unless otherwise noted in the pattern instructions. The eyelet peg is the peg mentioned by number in the pattern. These pegs will now be empty, and the pegs to the right (or left if directed in the pattern) will have 4 loops on them. Wrap the row as usual. There will now be 1 wrap on the eyelet peg and 5 wraps on the peg to the right (or left if directed in the pattern). Pick over, lifting 3 over 2 on the pegs with 5 wraps and doing nothing to the pegs with only one wrap.
2. Wrap the next row. The eyelet pegs will now have 2 wraps and the pegs to the right (or left if directed in the pattern) will have 3 wraps. Pick over, lifting 1 over 2 on the pegs with 3 wraps and doing nothing to the pegs that have only 2 wraps.
3. Wrap the next row. Now all the pegs will have 3 wraps on them. Pick over, lifting 1 over 2 on all the pegs.

Finished size is approx. 13.5” X 16.5”

You will be lifting 1 stitch over 2 stitches and using the stockinet stitch throughout the pattern.

1. Cast on 41 stitches using the stockinet cast on. To do this, wrap one row, lay the anchor yarn, then wrap the board 2 more times. You will have 3 loops on each peg. This is the only time you will wrap the two rows consecutively.

2. Knit 2 rows, remembering to lift 1 over 2 on each row.

3. Make an eyelet on pegs 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, and 39 (See Pattern Notes).

4. Make an eyelet on pegs 3 and 39 (See Pattern Notes). With the eyelet on peg 39, move the loops to the peg on the left. This will help to make the edge even.

5. Repeat step 4 (31) more times. There will be 32 of these patterns in all.

6. Repeat step 3.

7. Bind off and weave in ends.
