Hungry Froggy Baby Bib
by Karen Gielen

An online friend of mine was looking for baby items with a frog theme for her sister who was expecting a baby. Since my friend has always been ready and willing to lend me a hand, I let her know I would design her something special she could knit up quickly for her sister’s baby as a way to show my thanks and appreciation. I sat down one day and just started messing around with my loom and my Hungry Froggy Baby Bib was born.

Pattern Information

Materials
Knitting Loom: Fine gauge round loom or single sided rake; with a minimum of 33 pegs. A fine gauge Décor Accent sock loom was used in sample.

Yarn: Approx. 90 yards of green worsted weight 100% cotton yarn; approx ½ yard pink worsted weight 100% cotton yarn; approx. ¼ yard black worsted weight 100% cotton yarn; and approx. ¼ yard white 100% cotton yarn. Lily Sugar ‘n Cream 100% Cotton yarn was used in sample.

Abbreviations:

EW=ewrap or twisted knit stitch

K2tog=knit two stitches together
P2tog=purl two stitches together

Pattern Notes:

CO1: Cast on 1 by e-wrapping the next empty peg to left/right.
When casting on stitches, do not knit these stitches until the next row.
The EW stitch is used whenever the pattern says to knit.

How to make a center pull bobbin:
Hold index finger and middle finger together, hold pinky and ring finger together; spread them to form a "V" between the middle and ring finger. With approx. 1/8 yard of yarn, place one end of yarn in palm of hand and begin winding yarn in a figure 8 starting over the top of the index finger, wrapping towards the inside of the ring finger and under the pinky, in towards the middle finger and back over the top of the index finger. Continue to wind until you have a tail that is approx. 1". Wind this piece around the center of the figure 8 and secure.

Visit the following links for detailed instructions on performing the embroidery stitch used in this design:

The ‘right’ side of your piece will be facing away from you as you work the main part of the pattern.

The ridges above the eyes are worked separately.

Tongue - with pink yarn crochet cast on 2sts from right to left
R1: P, CO1, turn (3 stitches)
R2: K, CO1, turn (4 stitches)
R3: P, CO1, turn (5 stitches)
R4: K
R5: P
Rep rows 4 & 5 [8] times for a total of 12 ridges
Remove stitches from loom and place on a stitch holder with working yarn still attached. With working yarn single crochet a border around the tongue. Clip working yarn and weave in ends (live stitches will remain on stitch holder). With a small amount of black yarn, using the satin stitch, embroider the fly body onto the tongue piece. With a small amount of white yarn, create a figure 8, position the figure 8 over the fly body and stitch the wings in place. Set tongue piece aside.

Frog Face- with green yarn crochet cast on 15sts from right to left.
R1: P, CO1, turn
R2: K, Co1, turn
Rep rows 1 & 2 [8] more times (33sts on loom).
Secure last cast on with a single purl before continuing.
Place stitches from pegs 13-17 (counting from right to left) temporarily on a piece of scrap yarn or stitch holder. Remove the tongue from the stitch holder slipping piece between the loom (right side facing inside of loom) and the frog face. Place tongue stitches onto pegs 13-17 place frog face stitches back onto loom on pass 13-17 and knit off tongue and frog stitches together. Continue to work in garter stitch for 35 more rows.

There is a chart provided below of the eyes. You may simply follow the written out directions or mark pegs 5&10 to mark the area of the first eye and pegs 24&30 to mark the placement of the second eye. Then simply follow the chart between those marked areas. The chart will be worked from the bottom up!!

Secure another piece of black thread through the bumps on the back of the bib in the lower portion of the frog face. Poke through to the front of the fabric. Following the instructions for the backstitch, stitch the frog's mouth. Single crochet a border all around the bib in green. Weave in any remaining ends.
